Concealed Pistol Permit Information

The State of South Dakota issues concealed pistol permits to residents after completing the necessary application paperwork and passing a background check with the county Sheriff of which they reside.

Note: South Dakota law states that the applicant must have physically resided in and is a resident of the county where the application is being made for at least thirty days immediately preceding the date of the application.

  • Mail forwarding addresses do not meet this criteria for residency requirements.

Minnehaha County residents can either apply for a permit on-line or in-person at our office. Our office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am - 5pm, closed on holidays.

After 1 week for the background check on a regular permit, applicants who pass the required background check can return to our office, and receive their temporary permit. The enhanced and gold background checks take a little bit longer as the applicant’s fingerprints are sent to Pierre for the background check. For all permits, the actual permit card will come from the Secretary of State in Pierre within 30 days.
